About Rofin Medical

Rofin Australia was founded in 1978. Its main activity centred on the importation of Hi-Tech Scientific instrumentation. In 1987 the Company developed a specialised forensic light-source Polilight® together with the Chemistry Department at the Australian National University. This product changed the direction of Rofin to become a manufacturer and exporter.

The first forensic product developed and manufactured by Rofin was the Polilight®PL6, introduced in 1988. Forensic products since then include: the Polilight® PL10, PL500, PL400, Poliview®, Poliray® and most recently Polilight-Flare®. Manufacturing is currently restricted to the PL500, PL400, Poliview®, Poliray® and Polilight-Flare®.

The forensic Polilight® addresses a niche market of Forensic Science and the installed base of forensic Polilight®s around the world includes over 2,000 units in some 77 countries. The level of service required for this installed base is relatively small indicating a very reliable and robust product.

In 2005 Rofin won the national Australian Exporter of the year award for small to medium business.

In recent years Rofin was approached by several companies and institutions to develop a medical light source using similar design principles as those used in the forensic light source. With the assistance of some Australian Government grants an initial proto-type was developed and a medical trial conducted at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, for the treatment of skin lesions.

Rofin then went on to successfully apply for Australian Government Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) certification as a medical device manufacturer and listing on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). Rofin also has received certification for medial marketing in Europe and is currently applying for USA (FDA) marketing approval.

The medical business interests of Rofin Australia our now structured into a new Division with Rofin.
